This plant holder was the culmination of learning multiple mediums throughout my 3D Design class ending with a project statement of designing an 8” by 8” container using three different materials. The actual plant holder is made out of plaster that has been waterproofed, and the stand is created from wood as well as copper flashing. The plant inside is a Swedish ivy that originally grew above the mantle in the Oval Office during President Obama's presidency. As the plant grows, it will intertwine with the wood support beams. Over the course of watering it, the copper flashing will turn green on the legs.

A Container For Plant

The Process

  • Inspiration

This project was inspired by the geometrical boldness of the Lamborghini Countach designed by Marcello Gandini.

  • Modeling

Using styrofoam and chipboard, I modeled how I wanted the plant holder to look after the overall designs of the air scoops of the car.

  • Molding

Taking a second iteration of the form, I created a plaster mold to create the body.

  • Staging

Because I planned on planting ivy, I knew that I needed to add a structure that the ivy could grapple and grow on. As a result, I played around with the forms of vent-like structures on the exterior of the body.

  • Completion

The finished project was then sprayed with a waterproofing agent to keep the rigidity of the plaster when soil and water is added. Copper was later added onto the wooden vents which allows the model to change over time. Through the lifespan of the plant, the model itself will slowly turn green with the plant, adding a certain level of entropy to the container.
