Charcoal Drawing

Before I learned how to draw with charcoal, I had no formal experience with drawing. I found the use of charcoal as a tool pretty amazing. Depending on how you hold your instrument, you can get completely different lines and thicknesses. One piece of charcoal can create a near-infinite range of shades. I feel that I have a better appreciation now with both positive and negative spaces and how to utilize them to their fullest extent.

As the final project for Intro to Drawing, we were given a mountain of objects and plants, as well as a large canvas and charcoal to create a drawing of the objects we saw in front of us. This class obviously taught me how to draw a lot better than I used to be able to, but more than anything, it gave me a new perspective on seeing positive and negative aspects of shapes. This final drawing, as well as the class as a whole, helped me in profound ways.
